About the Item
Monumental in scale and masterfully carved, this Antique French Louis XIII Style Renaissance Revival Step Back Cabinet dates to the mid-19th century and showcases the extraordinary craftsmanship and exuberant ornamentation characteristic of the style. The upper case features tall glass panel doors flanked by elaborately carved pilasters, each adorned with scrolling foliage, floral motifs, and full-length figures in classical attire. A deep cornice is crowned with a central crest cartouche and supported by a frieze of carved grotesques, putti, and garlands, setting an opulent tone for the entire piece.
The lower case is just as detailed, with two deeply carved paneled doors framed by additional pilasters and adorned with expressive Green Man faces — a signature motif in French Renaissance Revival furniture. The doors open to reveal practical storage, and the cabinet’s overall form is bold and commanding. It’s a versatile piece that would elevate a dining room, library, or entry hall with both beauty and utility.
This cabinet is in nice antique condition consistent with age and normal use. There is a section of missing wood at the back of the uppermost shelf, making that shelf shallower than the two below. It has been securely braced to ensure full usability. Additionally, the backboards of the lower cabinet have been replaced to provide continued structural stability. There is minor wear to the carved elements and light rubbing to the finish, all typical for a piece of this age, and it presents beautifully overall. 88h x 60w x 24d
