日本の暮らしの中で長く親しまれてきた桐家具。その温かな質感と軽やかさをそのまま受け継いだ、大正時代から昭和初期にかけて作られた木製の引き出し箪笥です。柔らかく上品な木肌を持つ桐は、古くは平安時代の調度品にも用いられ、江戸期以降は“最良の衣装箱の材”として広く普及しました。湿気を吸ったり吐いたりする調湿性、火に強く燃えにくい難燃性、軽やかで扱いやすい性質など、桐材は日本の風土と実用性に極めて適した素材として長く重宝されてきました。この箪笥もまた、そうした桐材の魅力が余すところなく発揮されています。
本体から引き出し内部に至るまで、構造のすべてが桐材で組まれており、そのため全体の重量はわずか12.7kgと軽量で、手軽に持ち運びや配置替えができる利点があります。桐特有のまろやかな木目は、風化した表情の中に深い美しさが宿っています。取っ手は鉄製で、とてもシンプルな曲線で形作られており、控えめながら古家具らしい味わいと凛とした佇まいを感じさせます。引き出しの大小のリズムある配置が全体のデザイン性を高めており、均整の取れた構成の中に、小さな“遊び”のようなアクセントが加わった魅力的な佇まいです。
側面にはかつて持ち運び用の金具が付いていた痕跡がありますが、現在は欠損しており、そのおかげで側面のラインがすっきりと見え、むしろミニマルで美しい印象となっています。引き出しの一部にシミやわずかな欠けが見られますが、全体としては驚くほど状態が良く、手入れの行き届いた落ち着いた風合いが心地よさを感じさせます。引き出しの開閉はどれもスムーズで、実用面でも申し分ありません。
ソファ横のサイドチェストとして、寝室でのベッドサイド収納として、あるいはアトリエや玄関先での道具入れとしても重宝します。和にも洋にも寄りすぎない素朴で静かな佇まいは、現代の空間にすっと溶け込み、控えめながら確かな存在感を放ちます。桐材ならではの軽やかさと、日本の古い木工技術が生んだ端正な作りは、日常に静かな美を添える一台と言えるでしょう。
