About the Item

This impressive Dutch Renaissance cabinet, known as a Gelderse kussenkast, was crafted around 1750 and stands firmly in the tradition of Dutch cabinetmaking. The piece is made entirely of solid European summer oak that was water-seasoned, a technique that enhances both the durability and the striking grain of the wood. The bold cushion-panel doors are enriched with fine iron fittings, while the cornice is crowned with refined carved ornament. Exotic woods, imported through the extensive VOC (Dutch East India Company) trade routes, were applied as veneer, adding a touch of rarity and global sophistication. In the 18th century, cabinets of this type were both functional and symbolic. They served as storage for linens, silver, and precious textiles, while at the same time acting as a statement of wealth and status, proudly placed in the main rooms of distinguished households. In the Dutch Golden Age and its aftermath, when prosperity was fueled by worldwide trade, furniture like this reflected the wealth, global connections, and cultural refinement of its owners. The interior is fitted with two shelves, the lower one containing two practical drawers. As was customary for these large cabinets, the entire piece can be taken apart, making transport and installation easier. In our workshop, the cabinet was carefully cleaned and finished with a fresh wax layer, which highlights its warm brown color and beautifully aged patina. This remarkable piece stands as a fine example of 18th-century Dutch craftsmanship, uniting masterful woodworking, global trade influences, and timeless presence.

16th Century Renaissance Two-Bodied Cabinet
Located in Saint-Ouen, FR
Former collection Altounian At the beginning of the reign of Henri II (1547-1559) the furniture’s ornamentation evolves. The few medieval motifs that were still used are eventually relinquished. Furniture becomes more sober showcasing moulded panels and perfect architecture. Cabinet-makers use ornaments such as curved fluted or plain columns, feather quills, roses or winged putti heads. High-relief carving becomes more scarce and compositions lighter. To that end cabinet-makers draw inspiration from Fontainebleau motifs filtering them and adapting them to French taste. During this period cabinet-makers turn into a kind of architects. Indeed the architectural balance of furniture is the centre of their concerns. The study of Antic formulas is then a necessity. From this care given to proportions appear refined cabinets with pure lines. This style is characteristic of the reign of Henri II and disappears soon after under the regency of Catherine de Medici (1560-1574) when an abundance of high and low-relief ornaments comes back on furnitures. This two-bodies cabinet...
