About the Item

Antique painted cupboard dating from 1773, from the Swabian Alb, southern Germany. Its heavy, weathered character and the original paintings give it an extraordinary appearance. Both the design of the cupboard and the painting are simple and primitive, yet authentic and a typical example of folk art from the region. What makes this piece truly exceptional is that the base of the cupboard has remained completely blank and unpainted, while the original decoration in various motifs and shapes has been hand-painted over it. It is also remarkable that this delicate paint can still be admired after 250 years. Some parts of the original painting are worn and faded, but this contributes to the characteristic and authentic appearance of the whole. Moreover, the wedding date of 1773 can be read on the crest, albeit with some difficulty. The cabinet has been completely inspected and professionally restored, with an eye for originality and character. The construction is solid, the paintwork is worn but preserved, and the patina has been retained. The interior layout is still original, with one shelf and coat hooks. The cabinet can be locked with the original, working lock. Old, sporadic woodworm traces have been checked and treated. Parts of the crest and plinth have been expertly restored/replaced. The cabinet can be transported in two parts and is therefore disassembled. Wedding cabinets like this are rarely found. The age, patina, and the way this cabinet is painted make it an exclusive piece of furniture. 199cm high, 128cm wide, 52cm deep.
