About the Item
This exceptionally rare Model B 290 cabinet, designed by Bruno Weill (BeWe) around 1930 for Thonet-Paris, represents a key moment in the dialogue between Bauhaus Modernism and the French avant-garde. As artistic director of Thonet’s Paris branch, Weill decisively shaped the brand’s modern identity and opened the programme to the new architectural language emerging in France. In the 1930/31 Thonet card index catalogue, furniture by leading figures such as Le Corbusier, Pierre Jeanneret and Émile Guyot appeared for the first time, marking a milestone in the company’s design evolution. Parallel to this, Weill created around thirty independent furniture models – only a few of which are documented today. The B 290 is among the most progressive and architecturally refined examples from this period.
The cabinet’s construction unites a polished tubular steel frame with a lacquered two-tone wooden corpus, combining modern materials with a sculptural clarity typical of early international Modernism. The composition features a double-door cabinet element, two drawers, and open shelving, making it both functional and visually striking. Particularly characteristic are the large cylindrical Bauhaus-style handles, which emphasise the clean vertical lines and give the piece a bold, machine-age presence. The original Thonet manufacturer’s plate remains intact, confirming provenance and historical authenticity.
Professionally restored with great sensitivity, the piece retains the authentic visual character of the early 1930s – its glossy red lacquer and light framing highlight the strong contrast and graphic power so admired in avant-garde interiors. With its striking combination of industrial minimalism, architectural elegance and French modernist flair, this cabinet stands at the intersection of design history, museum-quality craftsmanship and collectible rarity.
Works by Bruno Weill – especially complete and documented examples – are exceedingly scarce on the international market. The B 290 is therefore not only an outstanding furnishing element but an important artefact of design history, illustrating how Thonet-Paris transformed architectural ideas into furniture of radical clarity and aesthetic precision.
