About the Item
An architectural free-standing cabinet designed by Willy van der Meeren for the Belgian manufacturer Tubax in 1952. This piece is a definitive example of post-war European functionalism, where industrial materials are utilized to create honest, modular, and accessible design. The sophisticated, high-contrast palette of light gray and black doors gives this storage unit a graphic quality, making it a standout piece of Mid-Century design.
The cabinet's structure is a robust black enameled metal frame, to which handsome wood side panels are riveted. Its clean facade is defined by the two enameled metal doors and punctuated by sculptural solid wood handles, which provide a warm, organic counterpoint to the industrial frame. The interior is thoughtfully arranged into two distinct 15.5” compartments: one fitted with a hanging rail and the other with fixed shelves, offering versatile storage options.
Presented in its original, as-found state, the wardrobe displays a history of use. Visible wear, including scuffs, minor losses to the enamel, and small dents, is consistent with its age and function. This authentic character tells the story of the piece and adds to its vintage appeal. Other colorways available (LU922446545382
