About the Item

Brutalist lowboard designed and produced by the De Coene company. Belgium, 1970s. Lowboard crafted from black stained oak and clear lacquer finish. Four geometric diamond-pattern doors, retaining the original keys. Its rhythmic symmetry and strong graphic presence define its brutalist character. De Coene operated in Kortrijk from its founding in 1887 by Jozef de Coene, with his brother Adolphe joining in 1895. The company gained international recognition with major awards between 1903 and 1911. Later, DE COENE became an industry leader during the interwar period, notably producing mass-market and luxury Art Deco furniture as well as pioneering plywood techniques after trips to the United States. The company continued its influence throughout the twentieth century, producing significant interior projects into the 1960s and 1970s.
