About the Item
This monumental manuscript cabinet is from Rangoon, Burma and made from teak wood, lacquer, and gold leaf. This manuscript cabinet features its original patina and a pair of doors that open to shelves for storage, wear consistent with age and use. Some of the gold leaf is still visible on the cabinet, beautifully aged patina. Monks once used this cabinet to store temple manuscripts and scriptures. Note that the cabinet is finished on all sides; it was meant to free-stand in the room and that room was a side-aisle in a great wooden temple. The decoration was meant to honor the holy works inside and promote the dignity of scholarship and learning. The cabinet was actually a library within the temple.
