A Dutch Rococo amboyna burl, walnut-burr and walnut veneer bow-fronted corner buffet cabinet, third quarter 18th century. The arched moulded corniche decorated with four carved C-scrolls with rockwork and flower-heads. Above a pair of arched rectangular and panelled doors, applied with C-scroll foliate carving, enclosing a plain interior with one extending shelf, above four shelves. On hairy claw-and-ball feet. Fitted with gilt bronze Rococo mounts and handles. Overall in excellent to good condition. No restorations. No or very minor non disturbing finer chips, well acceptabel considering the age. This impressive corner buffet cabinet with shaped concave convex body and delicately carved and applied decorations, clearly displays the movement in Dutch furniture that the Rococo spirit of Louis XV style caused. This is a good example of Dutch workmanship of that time. These larger corner buffet cabinets, about the same height of cabinets, were originally used as a kind of serving cabinet in the dining room. The four shelves probably held glassware and silver objects and a cooler would have stood on the cupboard floor. The extending shelf had been used for serving the dishes. Amboyna is technically not a distinct species, but is the name of the burl wood from any of the Pterocarpus species. Most commonly this is Narra (Pterocarpus indicus), but burl sections of Burma Padauk (Pterocarpus macrocarpus) are also sold under the name Amboyna. The name is derived from Ambon Island in Indonesia, where much of the figured wood is believed to have been initially exported. Amboyna is among the most expensive and sought-after of all burls, and is frequently sold as veneer. Size: Height 240 cm. wide 134 cm. deep 73 cm.
