About the Item

This elegant antique Bargueño or Vargueño desk was crafted in Spain circa 1820. The two-piece cabinet-on-stand features a rectangular chest resting on turned legs connected by a decorative wrought iron stretcher. The upper cabinet, fitted with wrought iron side handles, sits on rounded bun feet and opens to reveal a richly detailed interior of six drawers and a central door flanked by columns. The interior door conceals four additional drawers, all adorned with intricate brass hardware and fine marquetry. The façade is beautifully ornamented with ebonized moldings, circular brass stringing, and tortoiseshell inlay panels that contrast against the warm walnut case. The Bargueño design originated in Renaissance Spain in the 15th century, traditionally used to safeguard precious jewelry, coins, and documents. This example reflects the period’s refined craftsmanship and decorative flair. The piece is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use, showcasing a warm walnut patina and rich coloration throughout. A distinctive conversation piece, ideal for a study, library, or formal living space.
