About the Item

c. 1910s-1920s; Yawman Erbe Mfg. Co., Rochester, NY A monumental modular oak barrister cabinet by Yawman Erbe, one of America's premier early-20th-century makers of filing systems and office furnishings. Built in stacked sections, this example combines nearly every form of filing and storage the company offered: a glass-front barrister top, small accessory drawers, letter and bill file compartments, Shannon-style index drawers, mail pulls, and full-size file drawers on pressed-steel slides. Brass pulls and card frames anchor each component, lending a unified, early-office aesthetic to an otherwise hyper-functional arrangement. Yawman Erbe, founded in 1897, quickly became a leader in modular office equipment and precision filing systems. Their combinations-built like architectural casework-were installed in libraries, courts, insurance houses, and corporate offices across the country, many tailored to specific clerical workflows. This example carries the hallmarks of their best work: rift- and quarter-sawn oak, dovetailed interior drawers, and the company's recognizable pressed-steel filing hardware. 33" W x 25.25" D x 67" H overall Interior Dimensions (Top to Bottom, Left to Right): Top barrister case: 31.5" W x 16.25" D x 11" H Three small drawers: Left: 10.25" W x 16.25" D x 3.5" H Middle: 10.25" W x 16.25" D x 3.5" H Right: 10" W x 16.25" D x 3.5" H Pull door compartment: 4.25" W x 16" D x 10.75" H Two drawers beneath: Top drawer: 9.375" W x 16.25" D x 5" H Bottom drawer: 9.375" W x 16.25" D x 5" H Mail-pull compartments (three, identical): 4.375" W x 15" D x 10.5" H Full-size filing drawers (all identical): 12" W x 23.25" D x 10.25" H Four small drawers adjacent to top file drawer: 5.25" W x 18.25" D x 4.25" H Materials: Quarter-sawn and rift-sawn oak, brass pulls and card frames, pressed-steel slides on filing drawers.
