About the Item

Exceptional mid-century entomology cabinet made in the 1950s (possibly late 1940s) by Keravan Puuteollisuus Oy, very likely designed by Ilmari Tapiovaara. These specimen chests were traditionally used by entomologists for housing lepidoptera and insect collections, their shallow drawers designed to protect and display pinned specimens in an organised, archival manner. This particular cabinet retains a big collection of butterflies and insects, each carefully pinned and labelled, with many handwritten dates, mainly from the 1950s. The combination of the finely crafted wooden structure and the preserved natural-history material gives the piece the quiet presence of a small field archive—an atmospheric snapshot of mid-century scientific collecting. A true time capsule of science and design. The cabinet itself is beautifully made, with clean lines, precise joinery and the warm patina typical of Finnish craftsmanship of the period. While conceived for entomological work, its format makes it equally suited today for collectors of watches, medals, jewellery or any small objects that benefit from flat, compartmentalised storage and a museum-like presentation. The cabinet is stamped with the manufacturers stamp to the back. A rare and evocative piece that bridges design history, natural history and craftsmanship in a single object.
