About the Item
French Louis XV Style Marquetry Escritoire with Brèche d’Alep Marble Top, circa 1880
A fine 19th century French escritoire or secrétaire à abattant in the Louis XV style, crafted circa 1880. The piece is surmounted by its original shaped Brèche d’Alep marble top, richly figured in ochre, blush and cream tones, with a polished bevelled edge and a small, well-executed historic repair to the rear.
The cabinet is veneered in kingwood and tulipwood with striking chevron and crossbanded patterns, enriched with floral marquetry to the fall front depicting a ribbon-tied basket of flowers inlaid with boxwood, satinwood, and other fruitwoods. The frieze drawer features a fine running guilloche motif.
The fall front opens to reveal a leather-lined writing surface, an interior fitted with an open shelf and four small drawers, all veneered and finished to a high standard. Three further drawers are set below, each with gilt-bronze escutcheons and handles.
Ormolu mounts of finely cast and chased bronze embellish the angles, apron, and sabots, consistent with the Louis XV revival style popular in late 19th-century France.
The piece is constructed with a solid oak back and mahogany carcass, reflecting the quality expected from Parisian ateliers of the period.
