About the Item

Important Art Déco cabinet, attributed to Jules Leleu, realized between 1925 and 1930. Executed in mahogany veneer with subtle figuring and a warm, satin finish, the cabinet showcases Leleu’s unmistakable sense of balance, proportion, and understated refinement. The design features a rectilinear façade softened by rounded lateral profiles, a hallmark of Leleu’s mature style. The symmetrical composition is centered on four large doors, flanked by two smaller side compartments, each containing a vertical column of drawers with turned knobs. The main doors open to reveal a capacious interior fitted with adjustable shelves, illustrating the blend of elegance and practicality that defined Leleu’s production. The subtle curvature of the plinth base and the spherical feet lend a sense of grounded harmony to the cabinet’s monumental form. The use of this kind of handles provides a refined contrast to the depth of the mahogany, highlighting the precision of its joinery and the tactile quality of its surface. This piece exemplifies the sober luxury of French Art Deco, characterized by noble materials, flawless craftsmanship, and an emphasis on architectural purity. It stands as a testament to Jules Leleu’s mastery in creating furnishings that are both functional and artfully composed. Condition: Excellent overall condition. Minor wear consistent with age and use; original finish preserved with a fine patina. Prov. "Modernism" Gallery, New York; Private Collection, New York. Jules Leleu (1883–1961) was one of the most influential French furniture designers of the Art Deco period. Born in Boulogne-sur-Mer, he trained in the family’s decoration and painting business before establishing Maison Leleu in Paris. He exhibited regularly at the Salon d’Automne and the Salon des Artistes Décorateurs and won top honors at the 1925 Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs—the fair that gave “Art Deco” its name. From the mid-1920s through the 1950s, Leleu supplied complete interiors for elite private clients and major public commissions. His atelier furnished embassies and ministries, luxury hotels, and legendary ocean liners (including Île-de-France and Normandie). Alongside Ruhlmann, Follot, and Sue-et-Mare, Leleu defined the French Art Deco ideal: calm, impeccably proportioned luxury rather than ostentatious display. His furniture is renowned for superb materials (exotic veneers, parchment, shagreen), flawless construction, and a restrained, architectural line that feels modern yet timeless. Because Maison Leleu delivered complete décors, his pieces are deeply considered in use—comfortable, durable, and elegant—making them particularly desirable to collectors and interior designers today.
