About the Item

French Mid-Century Blonde Sycamore Credenza in the Style of André Arbus, 1940s, Parisian Mid-Century Sycamore Sideboard with Carved Phoenix Motifs, André Arbus Style A stunning French Parisian Mid-Century credenza, sideboard, or buffet in the style of André Arbus, crafted in the 1940s from beautifully figured blonde sycamore. This unique mid-20th-century piece features a central bank of four drawers flanked by two curved doors adorned with hand-carved phoenix motifs, a sophisticated decorative element associated with the French Moderne movement. The credenza rests on sculpted scroll-form feet that echo Arbus’s refined neoclassical sensibility. Expertly designed and well constructed, the piece offers ample storage with four dovetailed drawers appointed with faceted crystal pulls, and two generous oak interior compartments—each fitted with an adjustable shelf. Retains two original working locks and keys. The neutral blonde sycamore finish allows this exceptional sideboard to blend seamlessly into contemporary, modern, Art Deco, or Mid-Century interiors, making it both highly functional and visually striking. Customization of the finish is possible; a quote can be provided upon request. (Note: The carved phoenix appliqués could potentially be removed if a simpler façade is desired, though the condition of the wood beneath is unknown.) Measurements: Depth: 19.25" Width: 69.75" Height: 33.75" Interior shelf depth: 15.5" Designer Context – André Arbus This high-quality credenza is in the style of André Arbus (1903–1969), the celebrated French furniture designer, sculptor, and architect who helped define mid-century Parisian luxury. Arbus rose to prominence after exhibiting at the prestigious 1925 Exposition des Arts Décoratifs, and in the years that followed became known for reintroducing neoclassical elegance into modern furniture design. By the 1930s he had established a successful Parisian gallery on the Avenue Matignon, creating refined, sculptural works for an elite international clientele. Today his designs are held in major museums and remain icons of French Modernism. This beautifully proportioned credenza exemplifies the timeless, architectural lines and restrained ornamentation that characterize Arbus’s aesthetic.
