About the Item

An elegant late Georgian mahogany secretaire chest of architectural form, crafted in England circa 1800. The two-part cabinet is constructed in richly figured mahogany with satinwood and ebony stringing, and features a stepped upper section with a central cupboard flanked by striking oval satinwood panels. Below, a fall-front writing drawer opens to reveal a beautifully arranged interior in satinwood, comprising small drawers with ivory knobs, pigeonholes, a locking cupboard with hidden drawers, and a removable caddy unit—indicative of refined cabinetmaking of the period. The lower section offers three full-width drawers with oak linings and hand-cut dovetails, dressed with original brass swan-neck handles and escutcheons. The secretaire stands on simple square legs, and the two sections locate via large dowels for transport. An exceptional piece of late 18th to early 19th century English furniture, notable for its fine materials, detailed workmanship, and rare internal features. Dimensions: Height: 178 cm (70.1 in) Width: 98 cm (38.6 in) Depth: 48 cm (18.9 in) Condition: Good antique condition with wear consistent with age and use. Small historic repairs, light surface marks, and signs of an earlier gallery rail to the top. Supplied with two working keys. A decorative and practical example of Georgian case furniture.
