An Italian Renaissance Style Walnut Studiolo Cabinet, 17th Century
Description:
A renaissance style studiolo of architectural form in walnut, the exterior entablature with risen gallery fitting, over foliate cornice to further band of dart and frieze carved with central foliate grotesque mask between floral scrolls, beaded and recessed panels to either side, descending to primary body, flanked to either side by an ionic pilaster with matched half figures of youths in prayer and terminating in carved floral pendants, a single hinged fall front door centred by a seated allegorical figure bearing a basket and a dove emerging beneath, surmounting a heraldic shield of the typically Italian testa di cavallo form. The fall front opening to interior, two shelves with dentil cornice dividing the interior to three compartments, a panelled frieze (paper) drawer centred by winged putti mask pull surmounting an architectural alcove compartment flanked to either side by spiral colonettes, the beaded and recessed central door with foliate spandrels, a keyhole to the left opening to innermost compartment, a lower compartment beneath.
