About the Item

This Japanese glass-front cabinet was crafted during the Taisho Period (1912–1926) in sugi (Japanese cedar) and finished with kakishibu (persimmon tannin combined with pine soot), giving it a deep, smoky brown tone that has softened beautifully over time. Composed of an upper glass display section and a lower drawer unit, the cabinet has a wide, horizontal profile that brings a calm visual balance to a room. The upper section features original wavy glass, characteristic of early 20th-century hand-blown production. The gentle distortions, small imperfections, and subtle unevenness in the glass surface create a warm, lived-in atmosphere that enhances the displayed objects. The drawer unit below offers practical storage while grounding the piece with visual weight. Together, the cabinet functions beautifully as a display case for ceramics, books, tableware, or collections. Its aged finish, natural wear, and quiet presence reflect the wabi-sabi philosophy—beauty shaped by time, use, and imperfection. Condition Notes: - Structure is sound and stable with no wobble or structural issues in either section - Kakishibu and pine soot finish shows age-related wear with areas of color loss, revealing the wood beneath - Surface has minor chips, scratches, and dents consistent with age - Original wavy glass shows small scratches, light cloudiness, and minor imperfections typical of antique glass - Back panels show age-related splitting, gaps from wood contraction, edge chips, and knot holes (does not affect stability) - All sliding doors and drawers operate smoothly - Both sections stack securely or can be used independently Cleaned and disinfected with a non-toxic solution. As an authentic Taisho-era piece, this cabinet exhibits natural signs of age and use inherent to Japanese antique furniture. Characteristics such as finish wear, wood movement, surface marks, glass imperfections, and structural aging are reflections of authenticity and history, not defects.
