About the Item

This is a piece of storage furniture called a "kurumanagamochi," a traditional Japanese piece of furniture. Crafted from pine and cedar, it was originally used in the Tohoku region. The scratches and chips that occur over time, combined with the natural black color of soot, create a piece of furniture resembling a work of art. During the Edo period, kurumanagamochi were large boxes with wheels attached to the bottom for storing clothing, bedding, and other items. They were initially popular for everyday use and as emergency transport. Their use was banned by the shogunate after they blocked evacuation routes and contributed to the deaths during the Meireki Fire of 1657. While they subsequently disappeared from major cities, they continued to be used as storage furniture in rural areas. They were popular in the early Edo period, before the popularity of chests of drawers (tansu) began. While types with numerous metal fittings are still common today, pieces with such a simple design are rare. The flat top makes them ideal as a sideboard, and their simple silhouette enhances the look of any items you display. This traditional Japanese furniture embodies the Japanese spirit of "wabi-sabi," which brings peace and harmony to any space. Weight: 48kg
