About the Item
This is an old large black Japanese tansu, crafted during the Meiji period (1860s–1900s). It is made from traditional sugi (Japanese cedar), a material beloved for its warmth and natural character. The piece carries a quiet yet powerful presence, embodying the beauty of functional objects that supported daily life in Japan.
The design is stripped of every unnecessary element, achieving a pure and disciplined simplicity. Its clean, geometric form—composed only of balanced planes and lines—allows it to integrate naturally into contemporary interiors as well. The most striking feature is the lattice-front sliding doors. The vertical slats create gentle shadows that shift with the light, offering a depth and subtlety typical of Japanese aesthetics. This interplay of light and shadow is a defining expression of traditional Japanese design.
Signs of long use, along with careful repairs over the decades, lend the piece a rich and authentic character. Having been placed near an irori (traditional hearth) for many years, the surface has been naturally darkened by soot, transforming into a deep, smoky black. This coloration is impossible to reproduce artificially—it is a patina created only through time, fire, and human life. The texture is truly one-of-a-kind.
Inside, the storage capacity is excellent. The large compartment on the left is especially practical, offering space not only for daily items but also for tall objects such as vases or sculptural pieces. The sliding doors move smoothly, making the tansu comfortable to use in modern living environments. The entire piece has been carefully cleaned and is ready for immediate use.
This tansu embodies the spirit of wabi-sabi, where even the natural process of aging becomes a form of beauty. It is a work that holds both serenity and quiet strength—an expressive antique with a presence that enriches any space.
