About the Item

This is a large antique Tansu chest from Japan, crafted during the Meiji period (1860s–1900s). Made with Japanese cedar and finished with great care, it has endured for over a century while retaining a strong presence that reflects both the craftsmanship and aesthetic sensibilities of its time. The design embodies pure simplicity, stripped of all excess. The front is fitted with wooden sliding doors, presenting a dignified expression while also conveying warmth. Signs of long use, careful repairs, and the natural wear of time—such as scuffs and minor scratches—add depth and character, enriching the piece with a unique patina. The sliding doors operate smoothly, ensuring it remains a fully functional piece of furniture in a modern living space. It has been professionally cleaned, so it can be used with confidence from the day it arrives. There are a few small wormholes visible on the top surface, but there are no active insects, making it completely safe for use. Its presence makes it suitable not only as everyday storage furniture but also as a display fixture in galleries or shops. Quiet yet commanding, it has the power to refine and transform a space, embodying the Japanese spirit of wabi-sabi. Weight: approx. 50 kg _________________________________ Our Philosophy Objects always tell the truth. All I can do is just to face with them sincerely and give them deep affection as much as I can. There is no boundary of nationalities and of eras in beauty. But I think now is the time we choose 'Japanese style' and it will be the best way to remind us of what we are losing today and to question us about an essence of beauty again. I hope that you can touch the memories which the objects here have, feel and think of something invisible but exists undoubtedly.
