About the Item

This Japanese glass cabinet was crafted during the early Showa Period (1926–1945) in sugi (Japanese cedar) and finished with black cashew lacquer. The smooth, matte black surface creates a quiet, understated presence that blends naturally with both traditional and contemporary interiors. Its tall, two-section structure provides generous display space while keeping the visual impression light due to the expansive glass doors. All sliding doors are framed in black and glide smoothly, offering easy access without requiring clearance space in front. The upper and lower sections are connected with simple metal brackets on the back—added later to keep both sections aligned and secure. The glass panels have a soft vintage character with gentle distortions and subtle age-related imperfections. Originally used as a cupboard or hutch, this cabinet is ideal for displaying ceramics, glassware, books, or collected objects. The vertical proportions make it a strong focal point, while the natural patina and quiet wear embody the wabi-sabi philosophy—beauty shaped by use, time, and imperfection. Condition Notes: - Structure is sound and stable with no wobble or structural issues - Black cashew lacquer finish shows age-related wear including scratches, dents, and small chips - Surface retains a smooth matte tone with natural patina - Glass panels show small scratches, light cloudiness, and minor imperfections typical of vintage glass - Back panels have areas of natural wood contraction; some gaps have been covered with applied wood strips (does not affect stability) - Upper and lower sections are connected with later-added metal brackets on the back for stability - All sliding glass doors operate smoothly - Drawers open and close properly - Internal shelves are stable and fixed in place Cleaned and disinfected with a non-toxic solution. As an authentic early Showa-era piece, this cabinet exhibits natural signs of age and use inherent to Japanese vintage furniture. Characteristics such as lacquer wear, wood movement, surface marks, and glass imperfections are reflections of authenticity and history, not defects.
