About the Item

This multi-level cabinet is a 19th-century Korean clothing chest (jang) used for storing folded garments and personal accessories. The cabinet is beautifully faced with inset burlwood panels, inlaid with dark wood trim and adorned with prominent brass hardware in a manner typical of Korean cabinetry. Each of the small double doors opens to a large interior compartment, secured by full moon brass lock plates and petite, fish-shaped locks. Symbols of protection fortune, fish were a popular motif on the locks for cabinets chests, as their ever-open eyes ensured no criminal could evade their gaze. Fish locks are functional and include traditional keys. Minor splits to burlwood due to age.
