Large 19th Century Lacquered and Gilded Jewelry Box with Inlaid Mother of Pearl

About the Item

Rare Victorian (c. 1850) lacquered papier-mâché jewelry box with inlaid mother of pearl and gilding depicting a floral motif. The mother of pearl looks of high quality and shimmers with shades of blue and rose. Gilded leaves are interspersed with mother of pearl flowers with more gold leaf, vines, and smaller mother of pearl flowers along the borders. The exquisite detail and craftsmanship are evident in the design and execution of the various techniques used to create this lovely piece. There are four drawers, some with hidden compartments and two with velvet and/or silk interiors. The rounded top has two metal prongs that settle into aligning holes on each door frame for secure closure. Drawer pulls are made of carved shell of which three of eight are missing. The left door is missing some trim on the outside and lacquer inside where the door was forced, and the lock was broken (It wasn't me). There is no key for the lock and there is wear of the gilding consistent with age and use. There are some areas of chipped lacquer and one area that looks like it was repaired. Two shelves separating the drawers are detached and are easily set in place. See pictures. Note the royal mark and maker's stamp on door frame. The name Patel is of Indian origin, particularly Gujarat where many with this name were merchants and business owners with connections to the British East India Company (Wikipedia, 2022). My guess is that the origin of this piece is India and according to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, lacquered goods with inlaid mother of pearl of Indian origin were highly valued in Europe at the time and are often found in the holdings of cathedrals and royal treasuries (See the Met, Mother-of-Pearl: A Tradition in Asian Lacquer). It is rare to find a lacquered jewelry box of this type that is of this size, shape, and craftsmanship.

A scarce French Provincial Louis XV (1715-1774) / Louis XVI (1774-1792) Period mixed wood religious oratory (prie-dieu / altar) Hand-crafted in France in the 18th century, with later 19th century elements, likely originating in the south of France / Mediterranean region, featuring pegged solid wooden construction of warm, rich fruitwood, chesnut, oak, and maple. Having a slant-front bureau with tall raised back decorated with three Renaissance Revival style high relief panels, the center depicting religious scene comprising Jesus and winged Saint, the side panels with foliate floral fruit pendant carvings, flanked by classical turned baluster-form columns, surmounted with highly stylized hand carved and turned finials.
