About the Item

A large French carved and painted wood display and storage cabinet from the mid-20th century. This vintage French buffet à deux-corps (which is the name for a French buffet consisting of an upper and lower case, "deux" referencing the two parts) has a top case consisting of a pair of center doors, with see-through chicken wire fronts, flanked by a pair of slender closed doors at either far side. The lower cabinet houses two larger doors (with drawers hidden behind) at center flanked in keeping with the top, by a pair of smaller profiled doors. The cabinet features a molded upper cornice, shapely-canted and paneled sides, and secured on a flat base. The doors are nicely carved with curvaceous panels, with slender doors having elongated column-style fluting with chandelles. Carved-wood swags, ribbon twists, and foliage bouquets further enhance this cabinet. This piece breaks down into too many pieces (the upper cornice, two cases, drawers, shelves and doors) allowing for easier transport and installation. There is a wash of grey coloring, with taupe/beige accents. This wonderful French display and storage cabinet, with its shallow depth of approximately 20", allows this larger piece to function nicely within a space which may otherwise have a more confined footprint.
