About the Item

This is a magnificent and rare Louis Philippe period wardrobe, dating from the mid-19th Century (c. 1830s-1840s) and originating from a prestigious noble palazzo in Sicily. This substantial armoire represents the pinnacle of Italian decorative craftsmanship of the era, retaining its highly sought-after original lacquered and polychrome finish. It is a stunning architectural piece that would dramatically enhance any sophisticated interior. The structure is characterized by its tall, commanding silhouette and solid wood construction. The finish features a beautiful, aged patina of pale cream or off-white lacquer, elegantly offset by rich gilt detailing and accents of soft light blue or sage green in the panel inlays. The piece boasts a large, original, full-length mirror set within the central door, offering both utility and the effect of brightening and expanding a room by reflecting light. The most distinctive feature is the elaborate decorative crest that crowns the cornice. This highly detailed carving incorporates a serene central female or classical mask, flanked by two impressive heraldic escutcheons. One shield prominently features a crowned black lion rampant on a gold field, while the other displays a dove of peace set against a green ground. This use of heraldry strongly suggests the armoire's noble provenance. Further ornamentation includes fluted pilasters, classical foliage motifs, and delicate painted arabesques on the drawers and panels. The base features two functional drawers, and the entire piece rests on classically styled plinth feet. This wardrobe is offered in remarkable antique condition, maintaining its authentic character and historical integrity. The minor imperfections, including natural craquelure and distress to the lacquer, are a testament to its age and Sicilian heritage, making it a unique and irreplaceable collector's item.
