About the Item

Early 19th Century English Cellarette, also known as a wine cooler or caddy, is distinguished by its robust yet refined form and richly grained solid mahogany construction. The canted rectangular body is adorned with boldly carved rope-twist molding around the lid and base, a decorative hallmark of late Georgian furniture. The hinged top opens to reveal a deep, open interior once used to store wine bottles or decanters and often lined with lead or fitted with compartments. This allowed it to function as a stylish liquor cabinet. Piece rests on a carved pedestal base with four splayed feet terminating in brass claw feet with castors. Its mobility made it an ideal accessory for gentleman's libraries or drawing rooms, where it could be wheeled out for entertaining. In today' s homes this could be used as a stylish mini-bar, a unique end or side table, or in the entryway paired with a decorative mirror above and tray on top to hold mail or keys.
