Filing cabinet, lacquered steel, metal, Germany, 1960s
This filing cabinet from the 1960s is unusual because of its cylindrical shape. Instead of the usual boxy, rectangular form we expect from office storage, it stands like a tall, rounded column. The light grey lacquered steel gives it a cool, industrial look, but the curved surface softens the hardness of the material.
Inside, the system is even more surprising: the shelves rotate around a central axis. Rather than pulling out drawers, the user turns the inner sections, almost like a carousel. The partitions on each shelf divide the space neatly, so documents can be stored in clear sections, all accessible with a simple rotation.
