Filing cabinets, lacquered steel, metal, Germany, 1960s
These filing cabinets from the 1960s are unusual because of their cylindrical shape. Instead of the usual boxy, rectangular form we expect from office storage, they stand like tall, rounded columns. The light grey lacquered steel gives them a cool, industrial look, but the curved surface softens the hardness of the material.
Inside, the system is even more surprising: the shelves rotate around a central axis. Rather than pulling out drawers, the user turns the inner sections, almost like a carousel. The partitions on each shelf divide the space neatly, so documents can be stored in clear sections, all accessible with a simple rotation.
