About the Item

Designed originally to store sheet music, this cabinet is extraordinary for its large size and the decadent materials with which it's composed, specifically its ebonized maple columns and the mother of pearl inlay that borders its elegant doors. Although Joseph Maria Olbrich was Austrian, this cabinet dates from Olbrich's period in Darmstadt, Germany, where he became a professor and architect and where Olbrich designed several houses. It is possible this cabinet was crafted for Ernst Ludwig, Grand Duke of Hesse's music salon who had commissioned other works of Olbrich's and who, in fact, had founded the Darmstadt Artists' Colony in Germany. Exhibited: Four cabinets of this type are known to exist. Two of the other variants are in the collections of the Institute Mathildenhöhe Darmstadt and the Bröhan-Museum, Berlin. - Mathildenhöhe, museum of artists’ colony of Darmstadt. This important decorative arts museum in Germany displays an important set of furniture of the same series dated 1905 and coming from a music room (name of the commissioner not provided). This set is notably composed of a music sheet cabinet very close to ours, excepted the keyholes. -Bröhan-Museum, Berlin, a variant cabinet with upper glass doors is kept in the collections of this museum. -Victoria and Albert Museum, London, a desk from the same series is kept in the collection of this museum, accession number W.59:1 to 3-1981. Bibliography: For an illustration of similar cabinet in this series, see: Exhibition catalog. Joseph M. Olbrich 1867-1908. Darmstadt: Matildenhöhe Darmstadt, September 18-November 27, 1983. p. 309. (Keyholes are distinct.)
