About the Item

Charles Eames for Herman Miller ESU 400 Storage Unit, circa 1950 coloured panels Herman Miller label to middle drawer 148.5cm high, 119.5cm wide, 43cm deep The Eames Storage Unit (ESU), introduced in 1950, was a range of lightweight, fully modular storage systems designed to be customized by the user. The series was produced in three heights and two widths, with model numbers determined by the number of vertical levels in each unit. The 400 series consisted of units four levels high, all featuring a two-bay width. Each section could be configured with open fronts or backs using wire cross-bracing, drawers, sliding elements, or panels finished in either brightly coloured or neutral laminates, as well as natural plywood. All models were constructed with chrome-plated steel angles, legs, and cross supports. This example is an early version with six legs; around 1952, the design was revised to incorporate four more centrally positioned legs. The shelving and drawers are finished in birch and walnut veneer, complemented by baked enamel panels in various colours—including red, blue, and yellow—and “dimple” patterned sliding doors in natural birch veneer. Condition: The dimpled sliding doors have possibly been replaced at some point. There is some damage/scraping to the back, where the unit has likely been positioned against a wall. Overall in good condition for age and use.

Egon Riss for Isokon, Rare Original Vintage Penguin Donkey Mk 1, 1939, Birch Ply
By Isokon
Located in Wargrave, Berkshire
Egon Riss (1901-1964) Penguin Donkey, Mark 1 birch plywood 60cm wide, 43cm high, 42cm deep This original Isokon Penguin Donkey Mark 1 was designed by the architect Egon Riss in 1939 and made by Isokon, probably the most forward-thinking British furniture manufacturer of the 1930s, whose founder Jack Pritchard worked with the leading modernist designers and architects of the day to produce innovative furniture which have become design icons. Isokon furniture exploited the strength and lightness of bent plywood, and the Donkey is no exception. It was named the Donkey because of its organic, curvilinear shape with four legs and two 'panniers'. Books were stacked in the panniers while the space between them could be used for magazines and newspapers. In the late 1930s, the Penguin Donkey bookcase...
