About the Item

Designed in the early 1970s, this Softline cabinet by Otto Zapf is a characteristic example of his experimental approach to modular storage furniture. Central to the Softline series is the use of flexible lacquered plastic foil, which replaces conventional rigid surfaces and allows for soft-edged forms and lightweight construction. The foil-covered panels are combined with a structured internal framework, resulting in a cabinet that is both visually distinctive and functionally adaptable. Developed between 1969 and 1971, the Softline system reflects the period’s interest in new materials, industrial production methods, and flexible living concepts. Zapf’s work from this time stands apart for its clear structural logic paired with material innovation. This cabinet represents a rare and well-documented example of progressive German design from the early 1970s.
