About the Item

Provincial Buffet in Stripped Oak, France, Late 19th Century Channeling the softened contours of provincial Louis XV ornament An ode to rustic refinement, this late 19th-century French buffet reinterprets the ornamental fluency of Louis XV cabinetry through the lens of provincial restraint. Its structure is generous yet composed—marrying sculptural detail with the quiet utility of a rural household. Crafted in solid oak and stripped to a soft, dry finish, the façade is anchored by two serpentine cartouche-carved doors, each panel incised with a double border that suggests movement and containment. The central drawer stack balances the composition, fitted with original brass pulls that retain their oxidized luster. The buffet sits on bracket feet with subtle scrolled returns, and the base is finished with a discreet apron—curved, but not fussy. This is Rococo filtered through the sobriety of provincial life: decorative, but deeply functional; expressive, yet never extravagant. The oak surface retains its age with grace—visible grain, minor tonal variations, and softened edges preserved with care. Structurally sound and modest in its ornament, the piece is ideal in interiors that lean toward wabi-sabi minimalism, patinated elegance, or countryside clarity. Available for private acquisition.
