About the Item

A rare two-sided cabinet in solid pine, designed by Göran Malmvall and manufactured by Svensk Fur in Sweden during the 1940-1950s. The cabinet features doors opening on both sides, each revealing a set of sliding drawers in solid pine. Its freestanding construction allows access from either side, suggesting it was originally made for an office or studio environment. The expressive grain and warm tone of the pine highlight Malmvall’s sensitivity to natural materials and proportion. The craftsmanship is typical of Svensk Fur’s production — precise joinery, solid wood throughout and a focus on functional simplicity. All drawers are dovetail joined and slide smoothly, demonstrating the high standard of Swedish woodworking from this period. This is a seldom-seen model that combines practical design with the quiet refinement of early modern Scandinavian furniture. Condition is good and original, with minor wear consistent with age. The locks are not functional but the piece comes with one key. Later magnets have been added to keep the doors closed. About the designer: Göran Malmvall (1917–2001) was a Swedish designer and cabinetmaker, and the son of Karl Andersson, founder of Karl Andersson Söner. Trained within the family workshop, Malmvall developed a distinct style that blended traditional Swedish craftsmanship with the emerging ideals of functionalism. His furniture is known for its honesty in materials, solid wood construction and restrained detailing — qualities that make his work enduring examples of Scandinavian craft heritage. • Height 68 cm (26.8”) • Width 39 cm (15.4”) • Depth 62 cm (24.4”) • Solid pine with drawers on both sides • Lockable doors (locks non-functional, includes one key) • Designer: Göran Malmvall • Manufacturer: Svensk Fur • Period: 1940-1950s • Made in Sweden • Good original condition, with age-related wear • Rare model
