About the Item

This rare vintage bar cabinet, titled Carnac, is an early and significant work by Jacques Jarrige, created in 2000 at the beginning of his acclaimed Carnac series. It already reveals the gestural language, sculptural sensibility, and refined craftsmanship that would become hallmarks of his later work. Handcrafted in stained maple sycamore, the cabinet’s clean geometry is animated by a single swiveling door—its movement elegant and unexpected. One of the gilded facets serves as a discreet, sculptural handle, blending seamlessly into the form while offering a tactile point of interaction. Inside, the cabinet is lined in natural sycamore and fitted with two functional shelves, creating a refined contrast with the exterior’s dark stain and luminous accent. Though minimalist in its outline, Carnac is rich in nuance. The balance of form and void, the restrained palette, and the play between matte and reflective surfaces lend it the quiet authority of a small architectural structure. It is at once sober and expressive—an arresting sculptural object that invites touch and close looking. Only two of these bar cabinets were made: one in silver leaf, now in the permanent collection of the Musée des Beaux-Arts d'Orléans, and this unique version in gold.
