Solomia straw Marquetry Art Deco oakwood cabinet green orange black natural colors by RUDA Studio
The cabinet Solomia is inspired by the fertility of our land. The ornament is made in the ancient straw Marquetry technique in orange, green, black soil, and wheat colors.
Seemingly trapped between past and future, the cabinet became an example of a timeless object. It combines the stylization of vintage Art Deco and the philosophy of contemporary Ukrainian design. It is made of oak and inlaid with ornaments from the rye straw. The hardware is handmade from the brass in our workshop.
The origin of the object begins in Western Ukraine, where 80-year-old grandfather Orestes collects straw for our products. He carefully sorts the straws by length and diameter. In our workshop, the straw goes through a staining stage, after which it is inlaid with the object itself.
Straw is a very traditional and understandable material for Ukraine. Since RUDA Studio researches folk artisans' techniques of our country of origin, we decided to bring traditional marquetry to contemporary use. Combining functionality with aesthetics, we propose to consider straw as a unique material for unique objects.

RUDA Studio
RUDA is a multidisciplinary design studio, was founded by Oleksandra Rudenko and Yuriy Vovnyanko in Odesa, Ukraine. The main focus of the studio — space design and the creation of unique household items. During the creation process, we seek to make each project individual and special, focusing on feelings, custom items, and the combination of the historical and the modern. RUDA Studio researches folk artisans' techniques of our country of origin, we decided to bring traditional marquetry to contemporary use. "Our projects are about returning to the origins. We strive to restore the value of handicrafts and individual products. In our subjects we update the topics of conservation of the Earth's natural resources and human interaction with nature," says the studio's founder Oleksandra Rudenko.
