About the Item

A rare and charming late 19th-century Star Threads spool cabinet, crafted in solid oak with five glass-fronted drawers and original brass pulls. This compact yet visually striking piece was originally used as a countertop display for sewing thread in a general store or dry goods shop, promoting the Star Threads brand — a widely distributed name in American textile history. The drawers retain their original glass fronts with remnants of period oval paper labels, while the sides are branded with the firm’s signature red and green five-pointed star logo. Each drawer has been newly lined in rich blue velvet, creating a bold contrast against the aged oak. Compact, sturdy, and full of character, the cabinet remains highly functional while offering exceptional decorative appeal. Dimensions: 15.25" H x 17.75" W x 15" D Condition: Good/Fair. Wear consistent with age and use, including small losses, surface marks, and drawer rub. The second drawer from the bottom rubs slightly against the one above and may benefit from realignment. Original glass is intact; velvet liners are later additions. Provenance: A Private Collection: Roosevelt Island, New York City About Star Threads (Historical Note): The Star Threads brand was active in the late 19th to early 20th century, known for producing mercerized cotton thread for domestic sewing and embroidery. It is believed to have been affiliated with the American Thread Company, and its signature red and green star logo became a recognizable retail symbol throughout the United States. Cabinets like this were supplied to retailers as branded countertop displays — promoting brand identity while keeping thread organized by color and type. By the 1920s–30s, Star Threads was likely absorbed into Coats Clark, one of the major players in the textile industry, marking the end of its independent branding. Surviving cabinets are now considered valuable artifacts of early American merchandising and design. Styling Use Today: Though originally used to store thread spools, this beautifully compact cabinet is ideal today for: Jewelry or watch storage Sewing notions, craft supplies, or collectibles Desk or paper goods organization Retail showroom display or countertop merchandising A decorative accent with vintage charm in farmhouse, cottage, or industrial interiors

Late 19th C., French Gothic Revival cabinet, with interior shelf and central door. Heavily adorned with carved panels to front and sides. The front is comprised of panels flanking a central door. To each side of the door are two beautifully carved panels. The door has brass hinges and escutcheon. It locks with the key retained. The carving is mirrored on both sides of the piece, each comprising five carved panels. The red undertones suggest that this is a chestnut rather than an oak piece. The overall structure owes much to the Gothic Revival movement of 19th century France, with a nod to Renaissance Revival. The door panel is dominated by a lovely example of Gothic tracery in the form of a half moon “window...
