Willy van der Meeren (1923-2002) was a pivotal figure in Belgian modernist design, celebrated for his social conscience and functionalist aesthetic. After studying architecture under Victor Bourgeois at La Cambre in Brussels, he dedicated his career to creating affordable, high-quality furniture and housing for the post-war era. His collaboration with the manufacturer Tubax, known for its durable tubular steel furniture, resulted in some of Belgium's most iconic Mid-Century pieces. This wardrobe is a prime example of their shared philosophy. Designed with modularity and economy in mind, it was often used in student housing and social building projects. Van der Meeren masterfully combined inexpensive, industrial materials like enameled metal and riveted panels with the warmth of wood, creating pieces that were not only practical and robust but also visually balanced and sophisticated. His work avoided ornamentation in favor of clean lines and honest construction, leaving a legacy of purposeful, democratic design.
