About the Item
Medicine Tansu chest of drawers with Katana (Samurai sword) storage, Made of Kiri (Paulownia wood).
From Shonai district, Yamagata pref., Tohoku area, Japan.
This is an unique type of Kusuri dansu ( medicine chest / apothecary chest ) with the wide drawer for Katana storage on top, product of circa 1860s to early 70s. Since the private possession of Katana was officially banned in 1876, also, there're 2 pieces of handwriting paper remain inside 2 drawers, there're the dates in Meiji 11 (1878) and 15 (1882).
Shonai district - still famous for their premium quality Tansu chest of drawers in the Japanese traditional crafts - has a spectacular story in their history. During the fierce Boshin War at the end of the Edo period (1868-1869), Shonai Domain was on the pro-Bakufu (Tokugawa shogunate) side. While the other pro-Bakufu domains were defeated, Shonai Domain was the only pro-Bakufu domain to successfully defend itself against the anti-Bakufu domains until the end.
Imagine this Kusuri dansu was in that tough era, had survived until now for about 160 years. Personally I feel thrilled.
