About the Item
This authentic 18th-century French chest of drawers is crafted in solid fruitwood, displaying a warm, richly patinated surface developed through centuries of natural aging. The chest opens with three generously proportioned drawers, each adorned with finely carved shell motifs framing the original escutcheons, a decorative feature characteristic of late Baroque provincial furniture.
The drawers retain their original wrought iron handles and locks, reinforcing the piece’s authenticity. The gently curved top follows the movement of the façade and enhances the sculptural presence of the chest. It stands on carved claw feet resting on balls, giving the piece both visual strength and architectural balance.
The sides and back preserve their original construction, showing hand-planed surfaces, tool marks, and natural variations in the fruitwood grain. As expected from an 18th-century meuble de caractère, the chest presents signs of age including an old split to the top, traces of historic worm activity (now inactive), surface wear, and small old restorations. These features are consistent with its period and do not compromise stability, making this a genuine and evocative example of French provincial craftsmanship.
