About the Item
18th-Century Painted Gustavian Chest of Drawers – c.1770
An exceptional 18th-century painted Gustavian chest of drawers, combining the refined elegance of Swedish neoclassical design with the decorative artistry of Italian craftsmanship.
Beautifully proportioned and richly detailed, this commode features a subtly curved façade with three spacious oak-lined drawers, framed by graceful cabriole legs and ornate brass handles.
The original hand-painted finish, gently distressed through time, reveals soft tones of pale grey, cream, and blue — colours emblematic of the Gustavian palette. Beneath the aged surface, traces of delicate floral motifs and scrollwork evoke the influence of late-Rococo Italian decoration, creating a rare fusion of northern restraint and southern flourish.
The mahogany and oak carcass is exceptionally well made, the top showing a beautifully worn patina that speaks of centuries of use and care. Elegant in form and rich in character, this antique chest is both a practical storage piece and a statement focal point in any interior — from classic country house to modern townhouse.
Styled interiors are for presentation purposes and intended to inspire. Final layout may vary.
