1930 s Anglo Indian Camphor Wood Compact Wardrobe Chest of Drawers Vanity

About the Item

An Anglo Indian camphor wood step form compactum from the Art Deco period. Circa 1930. A very well made compactum, showing superb colour and figuring in the grain. It has the original finish, with a nice shine. There are some marks and knocks commensurate with age. Please refer to the photographs. The compactum consists of a bank of four drawers, the interior of the drawers are made in solid camphor and have handmade dovetail construction. Above the drawers is a lift-up vanity mirror and storage compartment, all enclosed in a frame. To the left hand side is a cupboard with a pull-out clothes rail and a tie holder on the door. It appears that originally there would have been two shelves to the interior of the cupboard, and the clothes and tie rails have been added at a later date. The compactum retains the original keys, working both locks well. The interior has the Classic camphor wood aroma. One of the bottom drawer handles has had a repair in the past. This is only noticeable under very close inspection, it is sound and solid and has had some additional screws to the inside. Sturdy in structure, with no loose joints, the compactum is free from any woodworm. Made in two parts, it is secured together by six screws. It will be packed in two parts. 137.5cm wide x 114cm high x 51cm deep. When the mirror is in use, it is 163cm high. Please note, to use the mirror, the compactum will need to be set 10cm from the wall. The interior space where the mirror is held is 44cm wide x 9cm high x 46cm deep. The compactum will be packed in two parts, it will need to be screwed together by yourself.

Repaired: It appears that originally there would have been two shelves to the interior of the cupboard, and the clothes and tie rails have been added at a later date. One of the bottom drawer handles has had a repair in the past. Wear consistent with age and use. Minor losses.

In 1883 he exposed his first works in Rome and in the next year he won the Gold Medal in the exposure in Turin. (Luisa GIORDANO, Cadorin, Vincenzo, in Biographic Dictionary of the Italians, XVI, Rome 1973, p. 97). His most known work is the gilt carved wooden desk given to the Pope Pio X for his sacerdotal jubilee in 1908; the desk is now in the Basilica della Salute in Venice. He died in 1925.
