1930’s Cotswold Walnut Chest Drawers Designed By WH Russell For Gordon Russell

About the Item

A Cotswold walnut chest of drawers from the ‘Shipton’ suite, designed by W.H.Russell for Gordon Russell Ltd in 1930. Superbly constructed in American black walnut, with chromed handles. Nicely proportioned with simple detail. It has has been sympathetically re-finished, still retaining some authentic marks to highlight its genuine heritage. The drawers are lined in solid cedar wood with handmade dovetail construction. Cedar's pleasant natural aroma acts as a natural dehumidifier by removing moisture from the air. This helps eliminate mildew and keeps your clothes clean and fresh. The drawers all work well. Overall very clean on the insides, there is a small mark to the base of the top drawer to note. Photograph (10 ) The back and bottom panel on the chest of drawers are also made of cedar. There is a knock to the base to the back, last photograph, but this is not on show when in situ. There is no maker's label, but this is a recognised Gordon Russell design. This particular suite is a rarely seen design. The dressing table is exhibited in the Gordon Russell museum. Sir Gordon Russell shaped the history of 20th-century British design, bridging the gap from the arts and crafts movement to a modern, minimalist aesthetic. Passionate about high standards of craftsmanship, he also accepted machinery as a means of reaching out to a wider market without compromising on quality. In 1924 W.H. ‘Curly’ Russell, no relation, started as a cabinet-maker and eventually progressed to chief designer, producing successful work for the firm, this design being one of them. The chest has handmade dovetail construction, with a shaped apron below the two drawers, standing on squat cabriole legs and a pad foot. Made in two sections. The chest interior is 87cm wide x 45cm deep x 30cm high. Condition report - With the original patina and brass wear. There are some knocks and marks expected with a piece of this age. The beading on the drawers has some damage. The top has some polish loss in one place, you should be able to make this out in the photographs.
