About the Item

Neoclassical / Louis XVI commode hand-made in Italy in the early 1800s. This small commode comes from the Alto Adige region of Italy, and shows some interesting Austrian and French influence. The commode, despite being small, is highly decorative (as well as pretty heavy). On the top and the sides we can see burl walnut veneered surfaces, framed by herring-bone cross-banded walnut veneer. The juxtaposition of the different grains of the walnut creates a beautiful pattern and alternating of grey and honey-toned streaks. On the drawer fronts the pattern is repeated but not with as much contrast as on the sides. The commode features two inset drawers with beautiful, large, hand-de dovetail joints. The piece also shows some French influence in the fluting of the corners and tapered legs, which is not surprising given the history of Northern Italy at the time the chest was made. This is actually the really cool thing about antique furniture, although there were some canons regarding the styles, at the end of the day these were all hand-made pieces made to the taste of the commissioner as well as inspired by the political events and situation at the time. Therefore, especially for Italian furniture, it is not uncommon to find these little one of a kind pieces that are influenced by the styles of nearby countries (or invaders). Because of its small size but highly decorative appearance, this would be a fantastic accent piece in a room that needs an understated piece that still catches the eye, as well as being a perfect conversation starter because of its unique history.
