About the Item
Built entirely of solid wood, the Shaker-influenced Rolling Dresser features open-frame construction and hand-carved, swiveling solid wood casters. No metal fastener is used. Even the axle that the wooden wheels turn on is hardwood. Three full-width drawers below, four smaller half-width drawers above.
The wheels embody the Shaker principle that furniture should be able to be moved out of the way for cleaning or when not being used. The joinery of the drawers is visible through the open frame, something that the Shakers might have felt was a bit showy.
Each box-jointed drawer are also entirely of solid wood, with no plywood, engineered boards. The drawers glide over the solid wood frame on their waxed wooden edges. Every surface inside and out is handcrafted and finely finished.
We maintain a stock of carved wheel assemblies but can construct the frame and drawers with a species of wood specified by the customer, subject to availability and possible additional charge. Made to order at our Chicago studio and available in a range of species and finishes.
Founded in 2011, AKMD developed out of a thirteen-year friendship and design collaboration between Ayush Kasliwal and Mike Dreeben.
The two met in Jaipur, India in 1998: Dreeben had recently completed an MFA in sculpture at the University of Chicago and was working on a Fulbright grant, studying vernacular woodworking; Kasliwal had just completed study at the prestigious National Institute of Design in Ahmedabad, with a degree in furniture design. What they found was a mutual interest in fine craft practices and how these could inform contemporary design. This has become a driving concept behind the AKMD collection.
Both Kasliwal and Dreeben are makers and their design approach begins with a deep understanding of the inherent characteristics of material and of production method — allowing process to drive design, rather than the other way around. Their work is pragmatic and honest: the materials are presented straightforwardly, as are the mechanical connections that bind the pieces together. Their furniture is notably free of veneer and plastics, that don't provide the kind durability that one can expect from solid wood, cast metal, or saddle leather And although everything they offer is meticulously crafted, their pieces are comfortable and unfussy — pieces that you can live with, that will respond positively to use and age by developing a patina that reflects their history in one's home.

Tannic Acid Dresser - French Oak with gradient
By Steven Banken
Located in Eindhoven, NL
‘Never use steel nails in Oak‘ was the advice of Banken’s grandfather. He was a carpenter and blacksmith and forms the basis of this project. Oak contains high concentrations of tannic acid, which turns dark blue when it’s exposed to steel. The same happens with steel, as a result of a chemical reaction between red iron oxide and tannic acid. To accelerate this normally undesirable process the elements that cause this natural transition are applied in liquid form on the other material.
Oak drawers are treated with red iron oxide, the rust of steel. Different shades of blue become visible by the intensity of rust. The ratio of drawers is based on the “plastic number” of Hans Dom van der Laan...
