American Chippendale Style Mahogany Lowboy, Philadelphia circa 1910

About the Item

A very finely hand crafted reproduction of the Philadelphia lowboys of the last quarter of the 18th Century, this exquisite piece is the most carefully and authentically crafted reproduction lowboy we've worked with. The vibrant and active grain of the mahogany planks selected for each portion of the case are most striking, the top a single solid plank with gadroon molding carved of the solid around all edges. Finely chiseled and finished carvings of sprawling acanthus foliage swirl around the rocaille carvings of the central drawer rest over a slightly graduated inversion of the shell carving central on the apron. The quality of detail is noteworthy, each carving deep and perfect with evidence of a robust and practiced hand. The knees are heavily carved with an anthemion surrounded by acanthus and other foliage over the cabriole legs that each terminate in handsomely carved ball and claw feet. Each drawer retains original hand filed gilded brasses, the poplar secondary frame hand dovetailed along the front and back with the bottom board chamfered along the edges and set in grooves in the frame. The top drawer is compartmented. For the serious connoisseur of fine American furniture, the Philadelphia lowboy is one of the most beautiful and intricate expressions of the Rococo spirit - as an original of this quality would sell well into the six-figures, most being held in museum collections and absolutely unattainable, this is a rare find of the same quality and vigor you would find in an original case of the period. It is an absolute statement piece that remains in nearly impeccable condition and will certainly be cherished in your collection for a lifetime. Measurements: 19 1/8" H x 29" H x 35" W Condition Report: Retains original gilt brasses, locks and one original key. Light wear around top drawer escutcheon.
