About the Item
This fine, imposing French commode is based on a design by celebrated 18th century cabinetmaker Jean-Francois Leleu (French, 1721-1763). The commode is of mahogany, in rectangular shape with a slightly curved front. The top of the commode is mounted in a sheet of veined white marble with a striking naturally occurring pattern. To the front of the commode are three drawers. The top drawer is mounted with an ormolu frieze of flowers and botanical motifs, which extends to the sides. The lower two drawers are both larger, each with two circular ormolu handles and fronted with rosewood parquetry panels bordered in ormolu. To each of the sides there is a square panel of similar rosewood parquetry. There are fluted pilasters to each end of the front of the commode, of which the tops are mounted with ormolu. The commode stands on four, fluted arrow feet.
