About the Item

Ref: 2171 Height: 1408 mm Width: 1058 mm Depth: 610 mm This charming Queen Anne period walnut chest of drawers on stand dates to circa 1710 and represents one of the most elegant and sought-after furniture forms of the early 18th century. Distinguished by its architectural presence, refined proportions, and richly figured walnut veneers, this is a statement piece of genuine period craftsmanship. The upper chest is arranged with two short drawers over three long graduated drawers, each displaying beautifully animated walnut grain with crossbanded borders and subtle feathering. Further frieze drawer to the stand section. The warm, oxidised colour and depth of patina have developed naturally over more than three centuries, offering a surface that simply cannot be replicated. Original shrinkage lines, surface undulations, and small historic losses remain visible, enhancing its authenticity and collector appeal. The chest sits atop its original stand, supported by elegant spiral-turned legs united by a serpentine stretcher. This elevated form was both practical and fashionable during the Queen Anne period, providing visual lightness while protecting the main carcass from damp floors. The proportions are well judged, creating a piece that feels both substantial and graceful. The original brass fittings, including early batwing-style backplates and pierced escutcheons, remain in place, further reinforcing the integrity of the piece. Internally, the drawer linings and construction exhibit early hand-cut joinery consistent with the period. This chest would work beautifully in both traditional and contemporary interiors — from country houses and Georgian townhouses to curated modern spaces seeking an anchor of historic character. Pieces of this quality and age are becoming increasingly scarce, making it not only a decorative investment but also a tangible fragment of early English furniture history.
