About the Item
A remarkable and stunning chest of drawers in wonderful condition. This outstanding and versatile piece marries wow-factor with antique craftsmanship and will enhance any interior with its luxurious and sophisticated aesthetic.
Likely originating as a late 19th / early 20th Century Indonesian chest, it has in recent decades been refinished by a country house estate in outstanding quality black and white checkerboard genuine cowhide. We can’t find another example the same, making this not only a splendidly attractive and wonderfully eye-catching piece but also most probably unique.
A great size for a versatile chest of drawers, it is reassuringly heavy thanks to the antique solid teak frame, which displays beautiful floral carvings to the base and reeding to the rounded feet.
The attention to detail and symmetry of the sumptuous black and white checkerboard finish is outstanding. The hand-stitched cowhide is of superb quality and even the handles have been finished in cowhide, while the back is finished in lovely quality black leather.
This extraordinary piece was reimagined in the early 2000s for an English country house and has remained in storage ever since and the drawers were likely added to the antique chest at this time.
All in all this is a timelessly elegant and sumptuously stunning chest of drawers, which blends traditional artisan quality with breathtaking, ultra-chic contemporary style. This refined-yet-extravagant blend of antique and modern is sure to be a knockout wherever it stands.
CONDITION
This is in very-good-to-excellent condition. Beautifully crafted, structurally sound, reassuringly heavy and built to last, it has been in storage since being reimagined in the early 2000s. The cowhide is in wonderful condition and there are some to-be-expected scuffs to the antique base and the black leather at the back. Overall this sensational piece is in wonderful condition and if well looked after it should be just as magnificent for many decades to come – please see the photos.

An uncommonly sized, very attractive, useful and versatile Georgian mahogany chest of drawers of good quality in lovely antique condition. Made in England in the early 19th Century, this charmingly compact chest of drawers would work wonderfully in a variety of settings and will add bygone quality and a superb antique aesthetic to any interior.
Traditionally hand-crafted from beautifully grained solid mahogany showing lovely, aged colouring, this handy storage piece is reassuringly and surprisingly heavy for a compact chest of drawers. It features three good-sized oak-lined drawers of varying height, complete with attractive double brass handles and ‘dummy’ locks to add a decorative flourish.
It has a large and usefully sized single-piece top with moulded bordering and is supported by a lovely mid-Georgian, tier-moulded base of legs with shapely three-sided aprons.
