About the Item

Art Deco Demi-Lune Origin of the Form The semicircular demi-lune console table traces its origins back to the French console and commode forms of the late 18th century (Louis XVI, Directoire), where the semicircular base was already valued as a space-saving and elegant wall solution. Transition to Modernism Around 1900, the demi-lune was revived and formally simplified in French Art Nouveau and early Art Deco: There is less carved decoration, instead an emphasis on the clean silhouette and the veneer surfaces. Art Deco’s High Point (c. 1920–1935) During the Art Deco period itself, the demi-lune console table flourished as a prestigious entryway and parlor table. Leading Parisian furniture makers (including Ruhlmann, Leleu, and Dominique) used the form for consoles, sideboards, and small bar cabinets. Typical features of Art Deco: Semicircular or segmental base, clean geometry, usually on four tapered legs; high-quality veneers such as Makassar, rosewood, and amboina, often combined with black lacquer, chrome fittings, and occasionally inlays or metal inlays. Function and effect: As a narrow wall console or placed symmetrically as a pair, the Demi-Lune frames doors, mirrors, or windows and adds an elegant, modern touch to the entryway or living room—a compact piece of furniture that combines representation and function (storage, drawers, small bar). The console is available individually or as a decorative pair.
